Correct. A case where there's no obvious trail to follow, no crime scene to examine, those are the type of cases that can become truly difficult and frustrating. Since yours is on a 'board' then all the clues are there. It just takes finding them on that board.

I've been to a lot of tropical settings. Then...someone usually dies, but I have some time to enjoy it first.

So does the island. All things have a definite start. And conclusion...well, depends on what you consider the conclusion.

Yours is just a game board. You can't have a game unless all the pieces are somewhere in play. So there will always be a way to find a trail. Because of the nature of the island and the area, it's not as easy.

But we don't know the game, we don't know the rules in place, we don't know who or how many people are playing... the best we can do is figure them out. Watch the moves that happen and interpret them. Then fight our way off the game board.

And try to make it so we're in control of the board. Once that's done, things get a great deal simpler. At least they're more straight forward. While on the board, it's a lot harder to find those paths that are obvious off it.

I suppose it's easier to think of it as a board where there's no squares you can move to-- a completely blank board. Without us pieces, the island seemingly has no purpose, right? So it's a blank board peppered with pieces. We are the only things necessary to facilitate the game. That should be a hefty enough hint.

It would be except I can't be sure who is a piece and who is not.

Typically, game pieces and the players have links, but the pieces can be unaware of their involvement. Something could be pulling the strings on them to make a move, but they're unaware that something is nudging them in that direction in the first place.

And in that action, there are spaces made on the board as the player knows how to move the pieces The hint gets distorted because it's hard to determine the pieces. With such fragments in the picture, it just adds more difficulty.
